TORONTO, September 7, 2021 - Thomson Reuters is introducing Westlaw Edge Canada, bringing its state-of-the-art legal research platform to the Canadian market. Westlaw Edge Canada brings together more than 100 years of editorial expertise, a legacy of quality and accurate legal research, and the latest advancements in legal technology to give legal professionals industry-first features that expedite complex and time-consuming research tasks.
'The pressure continues to grow for law firms and legal professionals to deliver high-quality and accurate results efficiently, and this trend has been exacerbated by the pandemic, remote working, and the ongoing digital transformation of the sector,' said Maria Cooley, head of Canada at Thomson Reuters. 'Westlaw Edge Canada was developed side-by-side with our customers to create tools that enable faster, more accurate legal research, while giving researchers confidence that they have thoroughly explored every avenue in their efforts to meet the expectations of their clients or business.'
'Our new platform builds on the premium content, editorial expertise, technology, and performance that the legal industry has come to expect from Westlaw,' said Mary Acimovic, director of Westlaw Product Management at Thomson Reuters. 'Westlaw Edge Canada offers a new standard for thorough and accurate legal research and will enable our customers to be more efficient, while bringing more transparency and value to their customers.'
Key features include:
Judicial Consideration for Statutes, driven by the Canadian Abridgment case digests, provides the most relevant cases interpreting a statute, saving time and allowing users to better understand how courts have interpreted the law.
KeyCite Overruling Risk leverages state-of-the-art technology and proprietary editorial content to identify invalid law and warn researchers when a point of law has been implicitly undermined, based on its reliance on an overruled or otherwise invalid prior decision.
Common Queries is a question-answering tool that allows legal professionals to quickly address common legal questions for a variety of topics, without drilling into a results list.
Sidebarring functionality enables legal professionals to seamlessly flag important paragraphs while reading cases.
Additional tools include Legal Topic Suggestions, which helps legal professionals uncover issue-specific and topical resources when typing key words into the search bar. Also, document-navigation features include a Table of Contents for cases, which allows legal researchers to quickly jump to parts of the document that matter most, and a Proceedings Filter for cases that enables researchers to narrow down search results by motion or application type to find the decisions most relevant to the procedural context of their matter.
'Following the successful launches of Westlaw Edge in the United States and UK, we're delighted to bring it to our Canada-based customers and share our biggest investment in innovation in the Canadian legal market in more than 10 years,' said Cooley.
