National Grid : Mass Save Marks 10 Years as a Leading Force for Carbon Reduction in Massachusetts

09/28/2021 | 04:32pm EDT

WALTHAM, MA: Celebrating a decade of progress for Mass Save, National Grid today jointly with the other Massachusetts Program Administrators released a comprehensive report summarizing the program's achievements toward reaching carbon neutrality through clean energy technology and affordable energy solutions. The 14-page report illustrates how Mass Save's best-in-the-nation energy efficiency programs have helped contribute to the Commonwealth's Net Zero goal and make Massachusetts one of the best places to live and own a business.

Titled "Mass Save: Path to Carbon Neutral," the report highlights the progress toward the Commonwealth's Net Zero goals and includes a breakdown of how much each city and town saved between Jan. 2011 and Dec. 2020 with Mass Save energy efficiency programs.

Among the Mass Save accomplishments:

  • Reduced carbon dioxide emissions by nearly 3.75 million metric tons through energy efficiency programs
    • Equivalent of taking nearly 800,000 cars off the road
  • Delivered over $200 million in annual bill savings for residential customers in 2020
  • Generated $27.4 billion in benefits for Massachusetts residents and businesses
  • Employs approximately 88,000 people annually
  • Weatherized more than 250,000 homes and counting

Because Mass Save knows energy efficient solutions must be equitable for all, it provided more than $680 million in gas and electric incentives to 24 of the Commonwealth's Gateway Cities. Last year alone, 29,000 low-income families participated in the programs and generated more than $77 million in total benefits. And when COVID hit Mass Save was there, becoming the first in the nation to offer virtual pre-assessments for customers; to date, almost 5,000 have been conducted.

As Massachusetts looks to the future, energy efficiency is one of the key tools it can use to continue to lead and innovate. Through creative partnerships, utilities, contractors, regulators, and residents are all working together to keep these programs running, and Mass Save has been successful because of this collaborative approach.

Mass Save - an initiative sponsored by National Grid, Eversource, Unitil, Cape Light Compact, Berkshire Gas and Liberty - is consistently among top performers in the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE) state scoreboard.

"While National Grid and our partners have accomplished much in the past ten years, we remain focused on the future and our goals of reaching Net Zero," said Chris Porter, National Grid Director of Customer Energy Management. "As we look ahead to the next decade, we are committed to an even better, more innovative, affordable clean energy future for all residents."

Mass Save partners say to reach their ambitious goals, they will need to deliver in two major areas: helping customers use less energy, and making new, green technologies available to everyone.

"Reducing carbon emissions even more will require ensuring not only those residents and businesses are using less energy, but that everyone has equitable access to the same energy efficient, sustainable technologies to help make a clean energy future possible," Porter said. "At National Grid, we're taking on challenges of global warming and grid modernization in a way that also provides a more affordable and accessible clean energy future for everyone in Massachusetts."
