Enel X begins electric bus operations in Brazil in collaboration with Rio de Janeiro city government

  • The vehicles will be used for free tours around the main cultural attractions in Madureira, a neighborhood in the northern part of the city.
  • Enel X will be responsible for operations, maintenance, and the charging stations for the electric buses;
  • The vehicles are the first electric buses to circulate Rio de Janeiro.

Rio de Janeiro, November 5, 2021 - Enel X Brazil, the business line of the Enel Group dedicated to energy solutions, will beginning operating the first electric buses in the country this month. As a Latin American leader in e-mobility, the company is partnering with the Rio City Government in the Verão Verde (Green Summer) program, which will offer free tours for visitors on the electric buses which will hit up the main cultural attractions in the neighborhood of Madureira, in the northern part of the city. These vehicles are the first electric buses to circulate the city of Rio de Janeiro.

The inaugural trip of the Verão Verde program was this past Friday (11/05), the National Day of Culture, and included the participation of the Rio mayor, Eduardo Paes, the Director of Enel X, Carlos Eduardo Cardoso, and two municipal secretaries of Transport, Maína Celidonio, and Culture, Marcus Faustini

"Enel X is a leader of e-mobility in Latin America and has collaborated in the energy transition for public transport vehicles in important cities, such as Santiago and Bogota. Its participation in this historic moment is emblematic for both the company and the city of Rio de Janeiro, which has always been on the cutting edge and a role model for the rest of the country. This deliverable to the Rio mayor's office is a demonstration of our business model. Promoting the decarbonization of city centers and offering benefits for the entire community is one of the company's main objectives," says Carlos Eduardo Cardoso, Director of Enel X.

The cultural tour covers 10km in approximately 60 minutes, visiting sites such as the Madureira Market and the Portela and Império Serrano samba schools. The route starts and ends at the Arena Carioca Fernando Torres, at one of the entrances to the Madureira

Park. The morning and afternoon tours will start running on November 13th, on Saturdays and Sundays.

"Rio is the cultural capital of Brazil. We will never accept oppression of its cultural manifestations. Two years ago, at the Rio Biennial Book Fair, we saw the mayor's office itself limit people's right to choose what they wanted to read, with a dose of unacceptable prejudice. I want to reiterate that Rio will be a space of resistance, a center for rebirth, not only after the pandemic, but also after this dark winter of oppression and lack of respect for differences and our culture," says mayor Eduardo Paes.

Enel X was selected through a public bid organized by the Mayor's Office and will be responsible for the operation, maintenance, and charging stations within the Verão Verde program. In total, there will be four vehicles in operation, including electric and gas- powered buses. The three electric buses used in the cultural tour of Madureira will be equipped with cell phone chargers. Enel X will also be responsible for installing the bus charging stations, as well as the selection and training of bus drivers. Each 100% electric BYD bus saves, on average, 118.7 tons of CO2 emissions per year, which is equivalent to the planting of 847 trees per vehicle (Considering 72,000 km covered per year).

E-mobility solutions

As the largest e-mobility player in Latin America, Enel X is responsible for technology installed in four countries around the region and close to 50% of the electric buses in Colombia, Peru, and Chile. The company was responsible for launching the operation of electric buses in those three countries.

In Brazil, the company is trying to push e-mobility in the country's main urban centers. Enel X wants to give Brazil an integrated experience, with its main projects including electric buses and charging stations, in collaboration with large assembly companies. The company looks to promote the energy transition of city transportation and sustainable actions to guarantee a higher quality of life for smart city residents and companies.

As home to the second largest bus fleet in the world, Brazil is a promising market with around 4,800 licensed electric vehicles. The segment shows an average annual growth rate of 34%. During the first quarter of 2020, this increase was three times larger than in the same period in 2019, reaching a growth of 221%.
