BAE : Meet BAE Systems Applied Intelligence's first Kickstart recruits!

06/09/2021 | 09:55am EDT
The UK Government launched Kickstart in September 2020 as its new flagship initiative to help facilitate young unemployed people into work. Kickstart is run by the Department for Work & Pensions (DWP) and is open to young people across the UK to apply for six month work experience placements. The UK Government also provides salary support through the scheme for young people for a 25 hour working week, and also contribute £1.5k in funding towards employer costs and training for the young person.

BAE Systems has committed a minimum of 30 kickstart placements in 2021. The roles are spread across our six UK based business units - Maritime Services; Land; Applied Intelligence; Submarines; Naval Ships and Air businesses. Within the Applied Intelligence team in particular, we have selected a Human Resources Administrator.

Each Kickstart placement will involve a core curriculum of centrally delivered training, including behaviours and other professional competency development, as well as technical on the job experience. Each individual will also have the potential to be considered for a full time BAE Systems apprenticeship or graduate role following the completion of the placement.

We wasted no time in recruiting for the scheme, and have already welcomed our first kickstart-er into the company. Meet Philippa who has been selected for the Human Resources Administrator role:

'Prior to joining BAE Systems Applied Intelligence's kickstart programme, I worked in numerous office roles throughout my summer holidays at university, and even worked as an Office Administrator for a property company after graduation. While I enjoyed Administrative work, I ideally wanted to work more closely with people.'

'Following graduating from my degree at Solent University in May 2020, I found it extremely competitive applying for jobs during the pandemic as there were large numbers of people applying. A lot of employers did not respond to applications to even offer feedback, which was demotivating. There were also a lack of job roles that interested me, many were customer service based or purely administrative. I was looking for a balance of the two, and something that was more long-term that could turn into a career.'

'The Human Resources Administrator role particularly attracted me as it matched my skill set well, and BAE is such a well renowned company. I am excited to see where this role will take me in the future. I found Job Centre Plus to be very supportive in my job search and throughout my application process with all of the jobs I applied for, it was reassuring to have a job coach on hand to review applications and reassure me when each job became very competitive.'
