GLOBAL MARKETS LIVE: Tesla, Best Buy, Qantas…

Highlights today include Tesla’s outstanding performance, Deutsche Börse's plans for the DAX, the Novartis share buybacks and the new Tesla boom. To ensure safe flights, Qantas will require vaccination certificates for its passengers, which could become a new standard.

Earnings season. Medtronic, Xiaomi, VMware, Autodesk, Dell Technologies, Analog Devices, Alimentation Couche-Tard, Compass, CRH, Best Buy, HP Inc, Dollar Tree and Tiffany are among companies reporting their results today.

Abercrombie & Fitch reported earnings for its third fiscal quarter of $42.27 million, or 66 cents per share, compared to $6.52 million, or 10 cents per share, a year earlier. Sales declined 5.1% to $819.65 million.

Best Buy saw its third fiscal quarter net income reach $391 million, or $1.48 per share, compared to $293 million, or $1.10 per share, for the same period last year. Comparable sales rose 23%.

Dollar Tree’s net income for the third quarter of its fiscal year of $330 million, or $1.39 per share, compared to $255.8 million, or $1.08 per share, a year earlier. On a comparable basis, sales increased by 5.1%, beating the consensus of 4.7%.

In September 2021, the DAX30 will become the DAX40 including 10 new values, Deutsche Börse announced.

Tesla's market capitalization is approaching $500 billion after further acceleration on Monday, prior to its inclusion in the S&P500 Index in December. Elon Musk has just surpassed Bill Gates as the second richest man in the world behind Jeff Bezos.

General Motors is expected to recall 5.9 million vehicles with defective Takata airbags. At the same time, the manufacturer announces that it has stopped supporting the Trump administration's fight against the State of California's tightening of regulations aimed at reducing vehicle pollution.

Novartis launches a share buyback program of up to $2.5 billion.

Enel to invest 17 billion euros in renewable energy by 2023.

Credit Suisse will record an impairment charge of approximately $450 million in Q4 on its minority stake in York Capital Management.

Qantas will make Covid-19 vaccination mandatory for its passengers.

The shares of the world's largest producer of latex gloves, Hartalega, fell sharply in Kuala Lumpur after some 2,000 of its employees tested positive for Covid.

The FDA approves Roche's Xofluza as a preventive treatment for influenza.

Bossard takes a 40% stake in MultiMaterial-Welding.

Elliott withdraws the disputed conditions for its offer to acquire Aryzta.

Sasol sells its 50% stake in its Texas HDPE plant to Ineos for $404 million.

Idorsia obtains positive results for the Japanese Clazosentan program.
