ADRs End Lower, BioNTech Unilever Among Companies Actively Trading

09/17/2021 | 05:17pm EDT

By Kimberly Chin

International stocks trading in New York ended lower on Friday.

The S&P/BNY Mellon index of American depositary receipts fell 1.3% to 163.30. The European index tumbled 1.5% to 142.74. The Asian index fell 0.8% to 223.47. The Latin American index decreased 2.7% to 191.86. And the emerging-markets index slipped 0.9% to 367.68.

A Food and Drug Administration advisory panel endorsed booster shots of the Covid-19 vaccine from Pfizer Inc. and BioNTech SE for adults older than 65 years and those at high risk of severe disease, but voted against advising the FDA to approve a booster dose of the vaccine at least six months after the second shot for people 16 years and older. The news sent ADRs of BioNTech SE, Pfizer Inc.'s partner in the vaccine, tumbling 3.6%.

Two months after Ben & Jerry's said it would stop retailing its products in Jewish settlements located in the Israeli-occupied West Bank, several state funds are selling or threatening to sell their investments in Unilever PLC, the ice cream brand's parent company. Unilever's ADRs fell 1.1% on Friday.

MTN Group Ltd.'s ADRs rose 1.9% on Friday after the South African telecommunications company said it intends to shed a stake currently worth around $2.09 billion in telecommunications-infrastructure company IHS Holding Ltd., if IHS successfully carries out its plan for one of the largest ever African listings on a U.S. stock exchange.
