Bidders, Winners and Records - September livestock update  Stud sales across the country are coming in hot this month, with buyers looking to invest in quality genetics going into 2022.

Here we review some of the highlights from our Elders network, as well as some of the results rewriting the record books.

Santa Gertrudis - Queensland

There was excitement in the air when the Yarrawonga Santa Gertrudis sale kicked off on the morning of Thursday 9 September, to a crowd of new and returning buyers. It was only the second lot of the sale when a bid for Yarrawonga Katmandu R236 set a new breed record at $150,000.

Watch the bidding.

Overall, the sale achieved an average of $15,245 with 100 per cent (pc) clearance from 159 bulls sold.

Congratulations to the entire Yarrawonga Team on an outstanding result for 2021 and thank you to top priced buyers Scott and Wendy Ferguson, Glenn Oaks for your support.

Angus - New South Wales

It was a sale that the Thompson Family from Millah Murrah Angus will likely never forget. The 33rd annual on-property sale was held on 2 September near Bathurst, to an eager crowd of buyers.

Just over two hours later, an Australian record was set, the highest grossing single vendor bull sale, returning $4,038,000.

Setting one of the many records during the event was Lot 11. Millah Murrah Rocket Man R38 an 18-month-old bull selling for an Australian Angus record of $280,000, to buyers Brooklana Angus Stud, Dorrigo New South Wales.

"Has this been the most talked about bull in the industry?" was the comment to open bidding for the now record-breaking bull, followed by a flurry of bids from the crowd eager to get their hands on the coveted genetics on offer.

The sale also set an Australian Angus record for the second top price of $240,000, with both lots exceeding the previous record price for an Angus bull in Australia.

Overall the sale achieved a record average of $34,220 per bull with 100 pc clearance, a record price for a yearling bull, and a record price for an APR Bull (Lot 59 - Millah Murrah Paratrooper R250) sold for $55,000.

"Once again it has been a privilege to be a part of the annual Millah Murrah Angus Bull Sale and Elders wishes to express our sincere appreciation." - Elders Stud Stock New South Wales.

Merino and White Suffolk - South Australia

The Adelaide Merino and Poll Merino ram sale was a great success again this year, despite the Royal Adelaide Show being cancelled for the second time due to current Covid restrictions.

The sale was interfaced with AuctionsPlus, bringing some additional interest as the border closures meant that interstate buyers were unable to attend the sale.

"This provided an excellent opportunity for South Australian studs to get in and secure some genetics," said Elders SA stud stock marketing manager, Tom Penna.

The sale was topped by Glenlea Park in Lot 1 selling for $56,000 to Boorana Merino Stud, Woorndoo, Victoria.

"Commercial clients were chasing meat traits with such strong mutton and lamb prices," reported stud owner Peter Wallis.

The sale sold 45/50 rams with an average price of $10,227.

Another outstanding result on the day was Orrie Cowie, who sold a ram under private treaty. The ram was at the show for inspection only but was purchased for $40,000 by Glenlea Park.

Top price for a private treaty Poll Merino ram was broken by Moorundie Park at Gulnare, who had a record-breaking price of $60,000.

The ram was sort out by a client in Western Australia who had bred the ram's Grand Sire. The ram had been unseen, but knowing the bloodline and wanting to maintain consistency of type, the buyer was happy to purchase. The ram goes to Seymore Park and Kamora Park, both are elite studs with quality wool in length and structure. The purchase will bring added value to the genetics and maintain the quality, as did the grand sire before him.

Wingamin White Suffolk set a new state record at their on-property sale at Karoonda on Monday 13 September 2021. Lot 1 sold through AuctionsPlus for an outstanding $32,000 to C J Squiers & Son, Shirlee Downs Poll Dorsets and White Suffolks, Quairading, Western Australia.

Elders SA stud stock marketing manager Tom Penna, had inspected the animal throughout the year and describes it as a "stand out ram". The top three bidders at the sale had not seen the ram, their trust was in the data, video and breeding. Lot 1 Sired Warburn 48 - had a major impact at Wingamin, putting thickness and shape into the backend. There were seven stud sires sold for an average of $12,000 and 112 flock rams averaging $1,485.

Moorundie Poll Merino Stud, Keith, had a tremendous on-farm sale. They recorded a new on property record price - an incredible $58,000 for a quality Sire - sold to the White River Merino Stud of the Daniels Family of Minnipa South Australia. The ram who attracted enormous interest pre-sale from both local and interstate parties was suggested to be 'The best ram the stud had offered on property' by the Vendors Geoff & Bernadette Davidson.

"The ram's solid frame, carcase attributes, structure and wool, stood the 138.5kg, AI bred son of Glenlea Park 180030, apart from his contemporaries", said Elders southern livestock manager Laryn Gogel.

The Stud had a total clearance at auction, selling 160 rams for a creditable average of $4,270.

Poll Merino - Western Australia

The annual Rabobank WA Ram Sale, held in Katanning on 20 August, marked the start of the Stud Sheep season. If the sale results are anything to go by, this season is shaping up to be one for the record books.

Top price Lot 1 East Mundalla sold for $51,000

Elders auctioneer, James Culleton, opened the sale, taking bids on an East Mundalla Poll Merino sire which sold for a whopping $51,000 to the House family, Barloo and Willemenup Studs, Gnowangerup.

Watch the bidding.

In total, 23 rams from 14 Western Australian studs were presented for sale, with the highest average of $13,156 achieved in the sales' 103-year history.

Elders stud stock manager, Tim Spicer, was very pleased with the results.

"It was certainly a very positive sale to kick start this year's Merino ram selling season" Tim said.
